You can add annotations to charts to highlight something or describe or draw attention to something on the chart:

To add an annotation, select one of the options on the Annotations menu or the toolbar:

Annotations > TextCreate a textual annotation.
  1. Click and drag to draw a text box.
  2. Double-click the text box to enter the text and change other settings.
Annotations > RectangleDraw a rectangle.
  1. Click and drag to draw the shape.
  2. Double-click the shape to change the shape settings (e.g. the fill and line colour).
Annotations > EllipseDraw an ellipse.
  1. Click and drag to draw the shape.
  2. Double-click the shape to change the shape settings (e.g. the fill and line colour).
Annotations > LineDraw a line.
  1. Click once to start drawing a line.
  2. Move your mouse to the other end of the line you want to draw and either:
    • Click to set a point and continue drawing another connected line.
    • Double-click to finish drawing and create the line.
  3. When you have finished drawing, double-click the line to change the line settings.
Annotations > SymbolDraw a symbol.

Click and drag to draw an areas where you want to place the symbol on the chart.

The symbol will initially be whatever symbol you used last, but once you have placed it on the image you can double-click to change the symbol (e.g. to a character from a font such as Wingdings) or replace it with a bitmap image.

Annotations > LegendAdd a legend (key).
  1. Click and drag to draw the area for the legend.
  2. Double-click the legend to change the settings.

Modify the Annotation

Double-click an annotation to open the Style Settings window, where you can modify the annotation settings.

The following are some of the settings you can change (not all these settings are available for all annotations):

Line
  • Show or hide the lines (borders).
  • Change the line colour.
  • Change the line width/thickness.
  • Change the line style (solid, dotted, dashed, etc).
Fill
  • Show or hide the fill colour.
  • Change the fill colour.
Text
  • Change the font.
  • Change the text itself.
  • Change the font colour.
  • Change the text alignment.
Symbol
  • Click Bitmap to import or select a bitmap image.
  • Click Font to select a character from a font (such as as symbol from the Wingdings font).
Legend Settings
  • Change the font.
  • Change the font colour.
  • Change the caption and add additional captions.
Annotation Settings
  • Select Static Annotation to keep the annotation position fixed even if the chart moves.
  • Select Always On Top to keep the annotation positioned on top of all the other layers.
The Style Settings window also has a Save Style option, which you can use to save your settings as a preset for use with other annotations.

Arrange the Annotations

When you have added annotations to your chart you can arrange the order in which they appear by using the Annotations > Bring to Front or Annotations > Send to Back options. Select the annotation you want to move and then use the menu option to arrange your annotations.
